Well, most of us will be agreeing that Google is the best search engine in this earth. If an individual surfs the internet for 10 or 15 min, one of the webpage that he/she would have visited will be www.google.com. You might be crying “Come on man, don’t write something that all of us already aware “. This is the message that I have got to say, we don’t use the world best search engine properly, that is we are not using it to its best advantage. Most of enter some keywords like “Google”, ”Microsoft”, ”Apple”, or whatever may be the keyword, hit enter and hope for the best.
Google provides much more flexibility to you then what you think. I’ll share some of the things that I know, which I gained by learning some books.
Search secrets: Syntax Search Tricks
Using some syntax for searching in Google helps you to narrow down the results. A complete list of syntax is available at: www.google.com/help/operators.html
I’ll describe a very few of the syntax
- Intitle: this syntax searches the title of webpage’s alone. Example intitle: “Home”. This will show you a list of webpage’s that has a title “home”
- Intext: Does the opposite of intitle. It will search the text that appears inside the body tag.
- Link: if you are a webmaster, then this is for you. This can show you a list of webpage’s that links to you webpage or to other webpage. Example: “Link: http://www.mysite.com”
- Site: This search restricts you to top level domains. Some of the top level domain are “.com”, ”.edu”, ”.org”, ”.net”, ”.gov”, ”.mil”. Example Prof. John E Hopcroft as intitle, since Hopcroft is a professor, you may have to know something in terms of education, so in this case the top level domain will be .edu(mostly). The search syntax looks like this: “intitle: “”Prof John E Hopcroft” site: edu. Try mixing various elements; it will be interesting and amazing.
- You can also search within a timeframe. Syntax is “ Daterange: (start date–end date)”
What other services Google offer. Ah…huh….That’s quite difficult to answer, because the services offered by Google are innumerable and they are providing more services as days go.
- Google can perform basic math function or scientific calculation. www.google.com/help/features.html#calculator
- It can help you to figure out whether you have entered the right spelling and right word for search. Try “Wordpres”.
- Got to contact someone, but you don’t have the number. Need not to worry about. Google gives you a hand even for this. Just enter the name, city (optional), state. You will get the necessary information in a cool way. Here you can narrow down your results in two ways. Either you can get business listing s or residential listings. Use the word “bphonebook: “in the former case and “rphonebook:” in the later case. www.buzztoolbox.com/google/yellowsearch.shtml
