Most of the tutorails for installing ruby on rails are available for Linux and Mac. And very few for Windows. You know I got vexed because I don’t know how to install rails and rubygems. To be frank I nearly tried around 1.5 weeks for instaaling ruby, rubygems, rails. So I have decided to write a tutorial to help you people out there. This installation process may take about a hour.

Installing Ruby

Installing ruby is easy. Just an click will do the job. You can get the one click installer from here. It is advisable that you install ruby in the following directory C:\ruby and also I recommend to install ruby 1.8.6. Having installed ruby you need to make sure wether ruby has been installed in the system.

Try this command line “ruby –v” (without quotes)  and you should get something like this: ruby 1.9.1p243 (2009-07-16 revision 24175) [i386-mingw32]. That’s it ruby is installed in your system.

Installing rubygems:

When installing ruby you will have gems installed in to it. All that you have to do is to update the gems. So for updating gems use this command in the command line. You should be in the following directory before trying out this command. C:\ruby\bin. If you don’t know how to get in to this directory type this command “cd  C:\ruby\bin” without quotes. Note you will see the word ruby in the command. This may vary for you. Probably it could be rubyX, where X is version. So check the exact folder name in C: or in the directory where you have installed ruby in your system.

“gem update –system”  without quotes. Probably it will take some 4 to 5 minutes not more than that. Note: if you get error such as cannot connect to socket or any other error that is related to network, try disabling your windows firewall and anti virus firewall. After disaling the firewall it should work.

Installing Rails

Go to C:\rubyX\bin in your command prompt and type this command

“gem install rails” without quotes. Installing rails will test your patience. Even there will be no progress for sometime, don’t panic ! Have some coffee or tea or whatever you want to have in the mean time. Now you need a database. I’ll teach you how to do that in the next paragraph

Installing  sqlite3 :

Again you can do this from the command line itself. Make sure you are inside C:\rubyX\bin, then type this command

“install the sqlite3 gem” without quotes

You may get an error when you build your apps such as “sqlite.dll not found. Re-installing the application will fix it”. So what you have to do is download the sqlite.dll file put it in your ruby\bin folder, which will fix the problem. You can get sqlite.dll from here

Time to test your rails installation: Create a folder called rails in C:. Go to command line and change the directory to C:\rails. Then type “rails project_name”. In my case project_name is “basic”, so instead of project_name, I’ll use basic. Hit enter. It will create a list of folders inside Basic. Ruby ships along with WEBrick. Now you need to start your WEBrick server. For doing that “ruby script/server” hit eneter some messages will displayed. Goto your browser type http://localhost:3000. You will have rails web page. Alas you have made it.

Steve is pretty lucky, because he did what he liked. Within 10 years Apple turned into 2 billion dollar company with 4000 employees. They produced their one of the finest creation MAC. Everything went fine in Steve’s’ life; he doesn’t know a big tragedy is waiting for him. His board of directors decided to fire him out of the company. What a hell are you speaking about..? How a founder and CEO of a company can be thrown out.(well , I too don’t know the reason behind it, if some one knows that share it with us). Soon he became a public failure. He came back where from he started. Almost he came to the roads. But again Steve continued to do what he loves. During the first few months, he doesn’t know what to do. Something started to dawn on him. During the next five years he started a company named NEXT and PIXAR, now Pixar is one of the most successful animation studio in this earth.  Pixar made the computer animated film “The Troy Story”. Soon Apple brought The Company NEXT and its not alone Next went under the control of Apple, it is also Steve who returned back to Apple. The technology that Steve developed in Next became the renaissance of Apple. He also met his life partner when he was out of Apple for five years. None of these could have happened if he was not fired out. Remember work is going to be filled for major part of your life. Do the work that makes you to feel great about it. The only way to do great work is to love what you do. Along with time you will tend to grow in a positive way.

Third story: The Death

Remembering that we will be dead soon, is one of the most successful tool, because almost everything starting from your fear of loosing something, pride etc falls away in front of dead. You are already naked; there is no reason that you should not follow your heart. Another blow came to him; he went to a doctor for a diagnosis. The doctor diagnosed him and said that, he is suffering from pancreatic cancer, a cancer that is incurable. The scan clearly showed a tumor in the pancreas. He had a biopsy in the following evening. The doctor took a piece of tumor cell, “Oh..! Jesus this is rare form of tumor that is curable with by a surgery”-said that the doctors. He undertook a surgery and thankfully he is completely cured. Thanks to the God.

Conclusion:

It’s simple. A life without failure is something unimaginable. You got to be a failure in some form otherwise how is that we are going to learn things. A big failure may thrash you out completely, but it’s the starting point for a beautiful thing. Love what you do and have some faith in you, and then God will definitely give you a hand.

Some window keystrokes work in the same way irrespective of all applications. One such keystroke is Alt+F4. What will happen if someone presses Alt+F4, the current active window will close, so if you have pressed it during the middle of something your current active window would have closed.  Well, then what will happen if you don’t have an active window. A small modeless dialog box will appear with three options, turn off, restart, stand by are the three options that will be displayed.

Windows offers us several other keystrokes that become handy during most of the times.

Alt+Ctrl+Delete will bring up the task manger.

Ctrl+Esc will pop p the start up menu.

Alt+Tab will bring up all the applications that are opened and also allows you to cycle through applications that are opened.

Ctrl+C are used to copy something.

Ctrl+V are used to paste something.

Ctrl+X is used to cut something.

On the left corner of space we have something a window like key, let us call it us “Win”.

Win+e start the window explorer.

Win+F pops out the search box.

Win+Ctrl+F pops out the find option to find out a computer on the network.

Win+R pops out Run dialog box.

Win+M will minimize all the windows and chows the desktop.

Win+Shift+M will restore all minimized windows.

Win+F1 starts window help.

Win+Pause will pop out the system properties.

And he recalled instances when international firms refused business with his company simply because he didn’t have a proper moustache, he was (and still is) so young! He said, “Hailing from a conservative family, I knew there was no way I could give up on my studies. So, I took admission in an engineering college whose lecturer on coming to know that I owned a company, applied for a job with us!” Gopinath didn’t admit his teacher in his company. “We strictly go by merit and do not admit anyone on connections alone. In fact we do not even consider how many marks one has obtained. The emphasis is on skills,” he said.

Gopinath, who idolize Bill Gates said, “When the global condense happened, our company wasn’t impacted. In fact, at Davos, we issued an advisory for global firms on how to be a winner in recession hit times.” His message to the youths: “Being your own boss is far more fun. It was a visit to an Internet cafe as a kid that led me to think of launching a company offering web solutions.” The first employee he hired for his company was 30 years, half his age.

“I realized there was a issue if the employees had a boss half their age. To overcome this, we did two things, started hiring younger people and laid emphasis on doing away with hierarchy. Often, we would switch off lights and start playing with the employees. That helped me bond with the employees.” How much salary does he earn?

“Well so much is being said about CEO salaries these days. But let me tell you I draw a very meager salary, almost what my project manager gets. I utilize the rest of the amount for my company’s expansion.” By the time he was through, Suhas Gopinath had indeed shaped several young minds in the audience as most of them said they too would like to employ rather than get employed.

For most of the applications we need a program to be running at the client side, for interacting with users. One common example could be, JAVA APPLET, FLASH content, which is also a dynamic content. An active content is stored in the form of binary code in the server side. When ever a client request an active content, it is transferred in the binary form, even we can store the active content, so that we need not request the same data, once again. Since the active content is transferred in the compressed form, both the transmission time and bandwidth are reduced.
